The Commissary Fairy

This might be a new one for some of you, but expatriates and military stationed overseas know her and her gifts well. According to Wikipedia, a commissary is recorded since 1362 as: "one to whom special duty is entrusted by a higher power". AMEN! She is a gift from God for sure and her duty to us has been very special indeed.

Okay, okay, so the real commissary: "has the derived meaning of a store for provisions. Modern commissaries are quite similar to supermarkets, providing members with most of the same available in the U.S. economy regardless of where they are stationed worldwide. Commissaries sell primarily grocery articles; other items can be purchased at a base exchange/post exchange."

TRANSLATION: American Junk Food in Europe!

Commissaries are found on US Military Bases worldwide. However, unless you are military (which we are not), the commissary is not open to you. This is where the commissary fairy (or fairies) come in.

Our dear friend MB told us some friends of hers were coming to visit for a day. The friend (Britney) lives on a military base with her military husband. Britney and her mom Penney asked if they could bring MB anything from the base's commissary for her. Well, MB, being the bestest friend on this side of the ocean asked if we wanted in on the submission.

Um, YES.

I didn't hesitate to ask for things I truly wanted. I didn't pull the polite, "Oh, maybe just a box of Mac N Cheese. That's all really." No way. We were blessed back in the fall with our friend in Germany with provisions from the commissary so we knew our options. And we let them know. Here's what they brought us:
This is one happy picture don't you think? Thanks to our commissary fairies for this abundance. The pregnant woman especially thanks you.

  1. heh heh...i just got some grits and baked beans =P Wish I had thought of graham crackers. There are so many summer pies w/graham cracker crumb crusts and I'm too lazy to bake my own graham crackers, lol. Going to have to find some kind of German substitute...sigh.

  3. I'm so jealous I'm drooling! I'm really excited for you. I get giddy every time someone is headed to the states and offers to bring some "necessities" back for us.
